From Our President

Steve Boswell

This October marks the 25th observance of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and this year’s theme is ‘Celebrating 25 years of Awareness, Education and Empowerment.’  Awareness, education and empowerment are important words for all of us to keep in mind when thinking about our health and have special resonance for the women in our lives this month.

Awareness
Awareness of your risk for developing breast cancer can help in making decisions about how best to address this potential health issue.  Every three minutes a woman in the United States is diagnosed with breast cancer.  It is the second leading cause of cancer death in women and the chance of developing invasive breast cancer at some time in a woman’s life is about 1 in 8.  African-American women are more likely to die from breast cancer than their white counterparts.  Read more.

Fenway part of Boston-area collaborative funded by DOJ to address African-American, Latino/a LGBT domestic violence

The Violence Recovery Program at Fenway Health is part of an organizational collaborative that has been awarded a 2-year, $300,000 grant by the U.S. Department of Justice: Office of Violence Against Women to address LGBT domestic violence in Boston-area African-American and Latino/a communities.  The anti-violence collaborative has dubbed itself Transforming Ourselves through Dialogue, Organizing and Services/TODOS in Action.  Other partner organizations include the Hispanic Black Gay Coalition, The Network/La Red, and Renewal House.

“The expectation that LGBT people of color receive care in white-dominated environments where services are created without community input can contribute to a feeling of alienation when seeking support,” said Kelcie Cooke, Coordinator of Fenway Health’s Violence Recovery Program. “This grant gives us the opportunity to work as a community to create services that can better serve African-American and Latino/a LGBT people who are impacted by domestic violence.”  Read more.

Thank you for making Harbor to the Bay such a success!

The 2011 Harbor to the Bay Ride was a huge success and we want to thank every single person who rode or crewed or worked on this year’s volunteer committee.  The Ride is an important source of support for HIV/AIDS programs and services at Fenway and all of the beneficiary organizations and Ride day itself is a huge inspiration for everyone involved.  We especially want to thank the 54 riders and 40 crew members who volunteered their time on behalf of Fenway Health and Team Fenway!

There is still time to make a gift if you want to support Team Fenway or any other team, rider or crew member – just visit Harbor to the Bay online.

Suffolk County Sheriff Andrea Cabral receives Michael A. Tye Leadership Award at 2011 Donor Appreciation Night

Suffolk County Sheriff Andrea Cabral was the recipient of the eighth annual Michael A. Tye Leadership Award at Fenway’s 2011 Donor Appreciation Night on September 22.  The event, held at Fenway’s Ansin Building, honored Fenway’s leadership donors and included a short program during which the award was presented.  Sheriff Cabral has been an actively engaged public supporter, donor and advocate of Fenway Health for more than two decades.  She is a member of Fenway’s Board of Visitors, served as a 2011 Women’s Dinner Party chair, and has worked with Fenway’s Violence Recovery Program since 1988, when she was an assistant district attorney in Middlesex County prosecuting hate crimes.

The Michael A. Tye Leadership Award is given in memory of Michael Tye, a dedicated Board member and staunch supporter of Fenway Health, as well as a respected business man, member of our community, and philanthropist.

Don't lose your FSA money!  Use it by December 31

Just a reminder for all who put money into a health savings account for 2011 and need to use the money by the end of the year.  As most of you know, money put away into a health savings account that is not used up by the end of the year will be lost.  If you have extra money that you could possibly lose, consider using it to buy yourself a new pair of prescription eyewear and/or prescription sunglasses. You can also use the money to stock up on contact lenses.  The Fenway optometry shop is also offering a 25% discount on any purchase of a complete pair of prescription eyewear or prescription sunglasses.  Read more.
