Women’s Health Team increases access to patient contraception
2011 was full of ups and downs for women’s health—contraception in particular. We saw the Affordable Care Act ensure insurance coverage for vital preventive care for women, including contraception, without charge. We also saw intense political objection to this and other women’s health issues (Planned Parenthood, anyone?) which promise to lead to Supreme Court hearings that will be intensely followed by the Fenway Women’s Health Team.
We hope that 2012 will bring huge victories for women’s health. To get things started here at home, Fenway is kicking the year off with increased access to contraception for our patients. In January, we launched a new Contraception Counseling Program designed to educate our patients more comprehensively about contraception options and get them the option they choose more quickly. And this month, our location at 1340 Boylston will join the Borum in being able to offer free or reduced cost contraception services to patients who qualify. Read more.

The Fenway Institute Policy Focus briefs highlight importance of gathering LGBT data in clinical settings
|
|

|
Last month, The Fenway Institute issued two Policy Focus briefs to
highlight the importance of gathering sexual orientation and gender
identity data in clinical settings.
Why gather data on sexual orientation and gender identity in clinical settings explains how gathering such data will help us understand LGBT health disparities, and how it is consistent with key recommendations in Healthy People 2020, the 2011 Institute of Medicine report on LGBT health issues and research gaps, and the Affordable Care Act. Gathering such data in electronic health records (EHRs) is especially important. How to gather data on sexual orientation and gender identity in clinical settings provides guidance on how to ask questions on patient registration forms and how clinicians can ask questions during medical visits. This second brief addresses concerns about confidentiality with EHRs and other potential barriers to collecting data on LGBT identity.

PHILANTHROPY CORNER

Fenway Health launches Haviland Society to recognize long-term regular donors
Fenway Health has launched a new donor recognition program, called The Haviland Society, to recognize and honor Fenway’s most crucial donors, those who consistently give to Fenway's Annual Fund year after year. The Haviland Society is structured in three tiers:
- Supporters (three consecutive years of giving);
- Sustainers (five years of giving);
- Visionaries (those who have supported Fenway Health for ten or more years).
Former Board member and longtime friend of Fenway Arnold Sapenter is Honorary Chair of The Haviland Society. The Society’s inaugural class will include around 350 members who will receive a special gift in recognition of their support and will also receive special acknowledgement in Fenway’s Annual Report and other publications.
