March 10 is National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, a nationwide observance that encourages people to take action in the fight against HIV/AIDS and raise awareness of its impact on women and girls. It is coordinated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office on Women's Health (OWH).
According to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 290,000 women in the United States are living with HIV. While men account for most HIV/AIDS cases, the impact on women and girls with HIV/AIDS is no less severe. Today, women account for more than 1 in 4 new HIV/AIDS cases in the United States. Of these newly infected women, about 2 in 3 are African-American. In addition, research shows that women face larger gaps in access to services and care than men face. Read more.

Policy Focus: PrEP could be a “game changer” in fight against HIV
| The Fenway Institute has issued a Policy Focus document making the case for implementing pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV prevention. PrEP has demonstrated partial efficacy with men who have sex with men and heterosexuals in several recent studies. Recent modeling of PrEP implementation coupled with scaled up treatment predicts that PrEP could significantly reduce HIV incidence and prevalence. |

The Policy Focus summarizes the state of PrEP and microbicides research as of January 2012, looks at willingness to use PrEP among various populations, addresses concerns about PrEP that could present obstacles to implementation, offers strategies for effective implementation, and examines policy issues related to cost and how to make PrEP accessible to those most vulnerable to HIV. HRSA Care Action puts the focus on transgender health
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) publishes a monthly newsletter titled Care Action. The December 2011 Care Action focused exclusively on transgender health, a first. The publication discusses health issues like HIV/AIDS and depression, systemic barriers to care, and cultural and clinical competency. Since Care Action is so widely read by medical and public health professionals, this focus on transgender health brings much-needed visibility to issues that affect the health of transgender people and the care they receive.
