Fenway Focus

From Our President

September 15, 2012 will see hundreds of riders making the 125 mile trip from Boston to Provincetown for the 10th annual Harbor to the Bay Ride.  Launched in 2003, Harbor to the Bay (H2B) has raised over $2,000,000 for Fenway Health and three other local HIV/AIDS organizations – AIDS Support Group of Cape Cod, Community Research Initiative of New England, and AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts. 100% of all money raised by riders has gone directly to these beneficiaries.  The ride also helps raise the visibility of HIV/AIDS in Massachusetts and serves as a powerful reminder that this epidemic is still an important issue.  Read more.

LifeSkills Study for young transgender women launches at Fenway

LifeSkills is a National Institute of Mental Health-funded multi-site study being conducted at The Fenway Institute here in Boston and at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago. This project is working to develop and evaluate a group intervention that could help stop the spread of HIV among young transgender women by helping them decrease high risk behaviors and empowering them to develop life skills. Over the next five years, the LifeSkills team is seeking to enroll young (ages 16-24) sexually active trans women and those on the trans feminine/MTF spectrum to take part in this year-long intervention and evaluation. You can learn more about this study online at projectlifeskills.org or by emailing lifeskills@fenwayhealth.org.

Fenway launches LGBT health education web site

As part of LGBT Health Awareness Week, the National LGBT Health Education Center at The Fenway Institute has launched its new website providing resources to enhance top quality care to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people, lgbthealtheducation.org. The website will include interactive learning tools for health care staff and clinicians to optimize their care of LGBT people throughout the nation and around the world.

“We have both the responsibility and the opportunity to make sure all people receive effective and sensitive health care, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, and that starts with providing health care organizations and clinicians with the tools they need to provide that care,” said Harvey Makadon, MD, Director of the National LGBT Health Education Center and Clinical Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.  Read more.
